The Friends of Human Relations of Santa Clara County is a nonprofit organization founded in 1985 by Jim McEntee. (The Jim McEntee Legacy Committee is now completely incorporated into The Friends of Human Relations.) The mission of Friends today is to continue Jim’s vision and spirit in the community. The Friends board currently oversees the Jim McEntee Legacy Art Project, raises funds for the McEntee Legacy College Scholarship Awards, and serves as the fiscal agent for the County’s Office of Human Relations and the Institute for Nonviolence.
This year we hope to provide 17 $2,000 scholarships to Santa Clara County community college students transferring to a four-year university with junior year status or to previous scholarship recipients. (While one-third of UC graduates and more than half of CSU graduates begin at community colleges, only 1% of financial aid for higher education is directed toward community college students." Ann McEntee and the Friends of Human Relations will be joined by supporters on April 21, 2017 at our sixth annual Jim McEntee Scholarship Fundraiser and Celebration. Special guest speakers will include Father Jon Pedigo, Chair, Interfaith Council on Economics and Justice and Assemblymember Ash Kaira, District 27. Guests will enjoy appetizers and desserts provided by Casa Vicky, music by Brian Ho, well known jazz organist in the Bay Area, and a preview of the very best of contemporary Latino art from MACLA's 19th Annual Auction on display in the gallery. Thanks to our generous donors, in 2016 we were able to award $30,000 to fifteen students. Recipients included seven students who have just transferred to a four year university to complete their undergraduate studies and eight previous McEntee scholarship recipients who are entering their senior year.
